Commercial Vehicle Inspection & Safety Resources

Prepare the vehicle, driver and records

Commercial vehicle inspection is an ongoing safety responsibility. It also has a different purpose from the vehicle-inspection portion of a CDL skills test. A licensing examination checks the applicant’s skills; an operational inspection evaluates compliance and the condition of a commercial vehicle and relevant records.

Use the current Texas DPS handbook to prepare for a licensing examination. For an operating truck or bus, review current Texas DPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement information and the federal rules that apply to your operation. Do not assume an older demonstration video reflects every current procedure.

Build a practical inspection routine

Know the vehicle you will use. Locate the controls and the components you must inspect, and use the manufacturer’s instructions when a procedure depends on the equipment. Work in a safe location with the vehicle secured. If a defect or warning appears, report it and resolve it through the responsible operator or maintenance professional before relying on the vehicle.

Keep driver, vehicle, and appointment records organized. When arranging a test rental, confirm which vehicle documents the provider supplies and which personal documents you must bring. Explain your license class, air-brake needs, transmission preference, and endorsement goal before making a reservation.

Use reference material actively

Read a section, explain the purpose of the check in your own words, then compare your explanation with the official reference. Practice identifying the equipment on the actual vehicle when authorized and properly supervised. Memorizing a label without understanding what makes the component unsafe is not enough preparation.

Ask questions when equipment differs from a diagram or a recording. The examiner’s current instructions and official testing requirements govern your appointment. Rental availability, a study guide, or a previous customer’s result does not guarantee your result.
