Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about permit practice, CDL requirements, test vehicles and preparation. Use the linked official sources for requirements that apply to your own application.

Where should I begin if I want a Texas CDL?

Identify the vehicle class and endorsements you need. Review the current Texas DPS application instructions, gather the documents required for your situation, and plan permit study, applicable training, and the skills appointment as separate steps.

Is a practice-test purchase the same as getting a permit?

No. This website provides practice access. Texas DPS administers the official knowledge examination and issues the commercial learner permit. Read the selected product’s access period and purchase terms before paying.

Which practice subjects should I choose?

Use Texas Commercial Vehicle Operation and General Knowledge as your starting subjects. Add Air Brakes for applicable equipment and Combination Vehicles for a Class A combination. Review the separate endorsement subjects for the work you intend to do. Confirm your exact examination requirements with Texas DPS.

What is the difference between Class A and Class B?

Class A concerns qualifying combinations, while Class B concerns qualifying single vehicles and certain towing configurations. The vehicle’s ratings and use matter. Use the Texas DPS classification guidance rather than assuming every pickup, trailer, truck or bus needs the same license.

Do I need ELDT?

FMCSA’s rules cover specified first-time applicants, upgrades and endorsements, with exceptions. Review the ELDT overview and confirm your situation with the provider and licensing agency. Permit practice does not itself complete required ELDT.

Does online theory include behind-the-wheel training?

Confirm the specific service you are buying. Theory, range activity, road activity, vehicle familiarization and a test rental are different services. Ask which are included and how any required completion is reported.

Can I rent a vehicle for the Texas DPS skills test?

Contact the team with your permit class, appointment location and date, and equipment needs. Confirm current availability, total charges, vehicle configuration, insurance requirements and the written reservation terms.

Will the transmission or brakes affect my license?

Equipment can affect restrictions. For example, Texas DPS identifies E as no manual-transmission-equipped CMV and L as no air-brake-equipped CMV. Review the full official restriction list and discuss your licensing goal before choosing a vehicle.

Does a successful practice score guarantee I will pass?

No. Use repeated practice to identify weak subjects and improve understanding. Read explanations and return to the handbook. The official examination, your preparation and your performance determine the result.

What if I need to change my test appointment?

Contact Texas DPS about the state appointment and contact the rental provider separately about the vehicle reservation. Review the applicable cancellation and refund terms; changing one booking does not automatically change the other.

Can I use the older videos to prepare?

The recordings are preserved for reference and show individual experiences. Check their information against current agency guidance, especially when a vehicle, inspection procedure or rule has changed.

Where can I get help with documents, medical records or eligibility?

Use the official Texas DPS application, medical-certification and eligibility resources. Those services can address your record. Do not publish license numbers, medical information or account credentials in a public review or social media comment.
