Texas CDL Combination Vehicles Practice Test

Combination study focuses on the relationship between a truck and trailer. Review how the units connect, how the braking system works across the combination and why trailer movement changes the way you inspect and operate the vehicle.

Think through the whole combination

Use a question to identify which part of the combination is being discussed, the condition described and the safe response. Separate coupling and uncoupling concepts from handling and braking concepts so that one missed area does not get hidden inside an overall score.

  • Coupling and uncoupling knowledge
  • Truck-and-trailer inspections and connection points
  • Trailer braking, stability and rollover prevention

Study the Texas CDL handbook

Review Section(s) 6 of the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook. Use the handbook to understand the material before practicing questions.

Plan Class A study and vehicle arrangements separately

Combination is one part of Class A knowledge preparation. It is also different from the Doubles/Triples endorsement topic. When you are ready to discuss equipment, explain the truck, trailer connection, transmission and brakes you intend to use.

Main CLP knowledge tests

For the Class A air-brake-equipped vehicle path, these four main topics apply. Class B does not require the Combination knowledge test; Air Brakes applies when the vehicle is equipped with air brakes. Texas DPS determines the requirements for your vehicle and license.

These are preparation resources. Texas DPS administers the official knowledge tests and determines licensing requirements. CLP preparation is separate from applicable FMCSA ELDT requirements.

CLP practice account and topic access

Choose any purchased topic in any order. Retest as often as you like during its 30-day access window. Every new attempt selects questions randomly and shuffles the answer choices.

Aim for at least 95% on five consecutive attempts for this topic. A lower score resets the streak. This is our practice readiness goal; it does not guarantee the official Texas DPS test result.
