Texas CDL General Knowledge Practice Test

General Knowledge connects many of the decisions a commercial driver makes: inspecting a vehicle, managing space, recognizing hazards and responding to changing road conditions. A useful study session connects the reason behind a rule with the situation where you would apply it.

Review one safety decision at a time

Group missed questions by subject instead of simply repeating the same test. For example, keep inspection questions together and review hazard questions as a separate group. Return to the handbook section for the idea you missed, then try to explain why the correct answer fits.

  • Vehicle inspection and basic vehicle control concepts
  • Space management, hazards and emergency situations
  • Cargo safety and the effect of vehicle condition on safe operation

Study the Texas CDL handbook

Review Section(s) 1, 2, 3, 12 and 13 of the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook. Use the handbook to understand the material before practicing questions.

Match the remaining knowledge areas to your vehicle

Your licensing goal may also involve Combination, Air Brakes or endorsement study. General Knowledge practice does not replace those separate subjects. Keep your selected topics together in one study plan and use the current DPS instructions to confirm your requirements.

Main CLP knowledge tests

These are preparation resources. Texas DPS administers the official knowledge tests and determines licensing requirements. CLP preparation is separate from applicable FMCSA ELDT requirements.

CLP practice account and topic access

Choose any purchased topic in any order. Retest as often as you like during its 30-day access window. Every new attempt selects questions randomly and shuffles the answer choices.

Aim for at least 95% on five consecutive attempts for this topic. A lower score resets the streak. This is our practice readiness goal; it does not guarantee the official Texas DPS test result.
