Vehicle rental planning

Planning a Texas DPS test vehicle rental

Published October 15, 2026 · By Get Your CDL Quick

A useful rental inquiry starts with the vehicle you need and the appointment you are arranging. Before requesting a quote, write down your intended license class, the testing location and your proposed date and time. If you are changing an existing license restriction, mention that at the beginning of the conversation.

Match the vehicle to your goal

Ask about transmission, air brakes, trailer configuration and passenger capacity when applicable. Texas DPS requires a skills-test vehicle representative of the permit held. Review the official Texas DPS application instructions and confirm your own circumstances before booking. A vehicle being available does not by itself establish your eligibility to test.

Ask for an itemized confirmation

Request written confirmation of the rental, appointment location, included time and any separate fuel charge. Ask what happens if the appointment changes, which documents to bring and where you will meet the team. Customers traveling from West Texas or another part of the state should confirm these details before arranging transportation or lodging.

Our à la carte pricing page separates vehicle familiarization, Customer Resources access, test rentals and fuel. Select the services that fit your needs and review the applicable limits. Limited familiarization applies your existing knowledge and skills to the vehicle; any applicable ELDT behind-the-wheel range and road activity is a separate service.

Prepare a short question list

  • Which vehicle and transmission will be reserved?
  • What location and appointment does the quote cover?
  • Which charges are separate from the rental?
  • What are the cancellation and rescheduling terms?
  • Do I need to resolve any permit or ELDT requirements first?

Read the test vehicle rental guide, then contact our team with your details. A clear inquiry helps us provide a useful answer before you travel.

Build a useful pre-trip study routine

Reading an inspection reference once and being able to explain it without looking are different tasks. An organized review routine helps you identify the parts you understand and the parts you still need to revisit. Begin with the current official handbook and the references appropriate to your vehicle class.

Use a read, recall and review cycle

  1. Read one manageable section. Identify the component, what you are checking and the reason for the check.
  2. Write the explanation from memory. Use the matching fill-in sheet where available, or a blank notebook. Avoid copying automatically without thinking about the meaning.
  3. Compare with the reference. Mark anything missing or unclear and return to that section.
  4. Repeat later. Try a clean copy without the answers in front of you. Explain the inspection in your own words while preserving the required facts.

Keep the reference and the vehicle connected

Use correct component names and check the configuration of the vehicle you expect to use. Write down questions instead of guessing. Review air-brake references carefully, and follow the specific preparation directions supplied for your Customer Resources materials. Written review supports recall; it does not replace safe practical ability or any required training.

The Customer Resources library organizes materials by Class A, Class B and Passenger/School Bus. Some items are view-only; others have a designated print or download link. Follow the options shown for each document.

Bring your questions and completed preparation materials when requested for your visit. If a subject remains unclear, resolve it before relying on it during vehicle operation. Read the Texas CDL FAQ for licensing questions and the service details for the scope of familiarization. Study habits and individual results vary; no routine guarantees a passing result.
