CDL Test Truck / Test truck rental
Rent the right vehicle for your Texas DPS CDL skills test
If you already have a commercial learner’s permit, the truck you bring to your appointment matters as much as the date. Start with the class on your permit, the equipment you plan to drive at work and the location on your DPS confirmation.
Which vehicle do you need?
- Class A tractor-trailer
- Ask about the tractor, trailer, brakes and transmission. If your job calls for a manual transmission, tell the rental office before reserving the truck.
- Class B straight truck
- Confirm the weight rating, brakes and transmission of the straight truck you will test in. An employer can help identify which vehicle you need for the job.
- Passenger or school bus
- Tell the office if you need passenger, school bus or both endorsements. Confirm seating capacity, school bus equipment and availability for your appointment.
Can I reserve a truck without enrolling in a full course?
Yes. Experienced drivers can request a test-day rental separately. Confirm what is included, where to meet the truck and the price at that testing office. A vehicle reservation and your DPS appointment are booked separately. If you need practice, request an itemized quote for the additional time.
How do I prepare for test day?
- Check the name of the skills-test site and date on your DPS confirmation.
- Check how long you have held your permit. DPS requires a CLP holder to wait at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
- Confirm completion of any required ELDT for your class or endorsement. Theory, behind-the-wheel training and an equipment rental serve different purposes.
- Review the inspection, basic control skills and road portions in the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook. Practice with representative equipment before the appointment.
